HMF aimed to mobilize the community through women’s self-help groups and help them to shoulder the responsibility of MNH. This involved forming new SHG's and organize existing SHG's. The Sure Start Project utilizes the following ten goals to educate SHG members to care for "adopted" pregnant women.
Following from the Sure Start program, HMF continued the maternal and newborn healthcare project in 50 slums with the support of Toyota Foundation Japan and the Maharashtra Foundation USA over the period of 6 years. HMF adopted nearly 18,000 pregnant women.
